North Island Credit Union grew up with San Diego. Founded in 1940 to serve Naval personnel in San Diego, they found themselves in the enviable position of being one of the city’s largest financial institutions by the mid-1990’s. Enter artist David Schweitzer, commissioned to create a custom mural for the organization: Polymorphous Paradise. Featuring landmarks of San Diego from North to South, the painting became an iconic representation of the organization’s position as “San Diego’s Own” and during brand launch was framed and presented to nearly every organization featured in the piece. From custom fabric for employee shirts and ties to directional signs on surf boards, the “Island” brand turned financial transactions – often uptight and distant – into something friendly, laid-back, and enjoyable.
